As a writer and publisher with years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how different platforms can unlock new audiences. As a poet who have found success not only through publishing my own poetry collections but also through editing, ghostwriting, copywriting, and helping others get their voices heard, I’m here to share 5 key things I’ve learned that can benefit any new writer

5 Pieces of Advice for New Writers

Here are 5 key things I’ve learned that can benefit any new writer

1. Just Start Writing

The hardest part is simply beginning. Don’t spend too much time thinking about writing or planning to write “someday.” You have to take that first courageous step and put your words out there. Publish that initial draft, whether it’s your first tweet or blog post. Once you get started, the confidence will grow.

2. Develop Consistency

After that vital first post, the next challenge is building consistency with your writing. Commit to a regular publishing schedule, whether that’s weekly, bi-weekly, or whatever works for you. Consistency is key to growing an audience. In the early days especially, you don’t want long gaps where you “ghost” your potential readers.

3. Perfection is the Enemy

Don’t obsess over making your writing perfect before hitting publish. Perfection is an illusion — your 669th piece won’t be flawless either. What matters is that you keep writing, keep improving, and don’t let the pursuit of perfection paralyze you. Publish and then refine as you go.

4. Utilize Writing Tools

As a new writer, leverage tools like Grammarly and Quillbot to tighten your prose and eliminate errors. Readers will be turned off by sloppiness. Using these resources will help elevate the quality of your drafts.

5. Engage Your Audience

Don’t just broadcast content into the void. Engage with your audience by responding to comments and joining conversations. People are far more likely to notice and support you if you engage with them as well. View it as an opportunity to build connections and create a mutually supportive community.

Freelance writing is vast, exciting, and rewarding if done right. By following these tips and staying persistent, you too can find your voice, connect with an audience, and earn a living from writing. Remember, consistency is key, so keep writing, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to experiment across different platforms.
