Memories Don’t Self-Destruct
I had a flash of memory about a sad time in my life, sparked by a similar situation that just happened. It’s funny how the past can come rushing back like that.
This memory took me back to a poem I wrote in 2017. One line stood out: “Memories don’t self-destruct.”
Isn’t that true?
No matter how much time passes, certain moments linger in the corners of our minds, waiting for the right trigger to resurface. They stick with us. Some are bright and vivid, while others fade a little, but they never really disappear.
Reflecting on that sad event reminded me of the lessons I learned. Sometimes, those tough memories help us appreciate the good times even more. They also teach us resilience, showing us how far we’ve come.
Think about a time when you heard an old song. Suddenly, you’re back in that moment, feeling all the emotions again. It’s funny how our minds work. They hold onto these snippets of our lives, almost like snapshots, waiting for the right moment to pop back up.
It’s easy to think of memories as burdens, especially the painful ones. But they shape who we are. They connect us to people, places, and experiences that have made us smile or even made us cry. They’re like little treasures we carry with us, reminding us of our journey.
Sometimes we try to forget things—bad experiences, awkward moments, or just those days when everything went wrong. But those memories have lessons hidden in them.
So, when those memories pop up, let’s sit with them for a moment. They’re part of our fabric, woven into our lives. Instead of pushing them away, we can acknowledge them, learn from them, and carry on.
Next time you find yourself reminiscing, take a moment to really feel it. Whether it’s joy or sadness, let it wash over you. It’s all part of being human.
