My Favourite Kind of People
My favourite kind of people aren’t defined by superficial labels - skin color, accent, language, gender, ethnicity, or physical characteristics. These arbitrary tags that segregate humans tell us little about a person’s true nature.
I've heard people say they have a "type" they prefer - perhaps based on body type or cultural background. While I respect others' preferences, I find this approach limiting. What do these external factors really reveal about a person's character?
Unfortunately, our society often judges people by such labels - age, stature, weight, gender, religion, skin tone, hairstyle, complexion, sexual orientation. But why are these traits considered so relevant? There's so much more to a person than these surface-level attributes.
The people I gravitate towards possess qualities that run far deeper:
1. They genuinely care. They're consistently present, attentive to my well-being, and offer a listening ear without judgment.
2. They truly listen. Our conversations are meaningful, balanced, and a highlight of my day. They offer valuable perspectives while giving me their undivided attention.
3. They're honest. Their word is their bond, and they follow through on promises. There's no need for deception or secrets between us.
4. They possess inner strength. This isn't about physical prowess, but rather about having solid morals, ethics, and principles. They're self-aware, confident, and not easily swayed by popular opinion.
5. They're respectful. Kindness extends not just to me, but to everyone around them. They uplift others rather than tearing them down.
6. They bring out the best in me. I've never felt more authentically myself than when I'm with them. They offer valuable feedback without trying to fundamentally change who I am.
7. They understand me on a deeper level. Their perspective often provides exactly the insight I need.
Instead of judging people by arbitrary labels, I encourage getting to know:
- Their personal history and experiences
- Their passions and interests
- Their strengths and vulnerabilities
- The ideas, philosophies, and events that shaped them
By looking beyond surface-level traits, you may discover your own "favourite kind of people" - those who truly resonate with your values and bring peace of mind to your life.
