Oh, the pressure to write for numbers and the incessant pull of trends! You know what they say—“write to go viral,” “gain followers,” “build an audience.” It’s like we’re all caught up in this game of metrics and validation. But what if I told you there’s a different approach that could lead to genuine connection and fulfillment?

Stop Chasing Numbers

How often do we lose sight of why we started writing in the first place? The thrill of sharing ideas, the joy of storytelling, the exhilarating process of crafting poetry, and the desire to connect with others often get overshadowed by the relentless pursuit of likes and shares.

Instead of fixating on those numbers, consider shifting your focus. What if you wrote to solve problemsshare your unique perspective, and educate your audience? This change in mindset can transform your writing experience and the impact you have on others.

Write with Purpose

Let’s break this down a bit more:

1. Solving Problems: Think about the challenges you’ve faced in your life or career. What have you learned from those experiences? Your insights can provide valuable guidance to someone else who might be struggling with the same issues. Write about practical solutions, share your process, and offer tips. When you address real problems, you create content that resonates deeply with your audience.

2. Sharing Your Perspective: Your viewpoint is unique, shaped by your experiences, culture, and values. In a world filled with noise, your authentic voice stands out. Don’t shy away from sharing your thoughts on topics that matter to you. Whether it’s a personal story, a lesson learned, or a commentary on current events, your perspective can spark conversations and connect you with others who feel the same way.

3. Educating Your Audience: Everyone has something to teach. Think about the skills or knowledge you’ve gained over the years. How can you share that with others? Write tutorials, how-to guides, or even simple tips that can help your audience learn and grow. That's what I'm doing with this piece. Education fosters trust and builds a loyal following, as people appreciate content that enriches their lives.

When you focus on these three aspects, you might be surprised by the results. The followers, likes, and shares will come naturally. People are drawn to authenticity and value. They want to connect with real individuals who provide meaningful content. When you prioritise impact over metrics, you create a community that genuinely cares about what you have to say.

This isn’t just about writing; it’s about a shift in mindset. It’s easy to get caught up in the “what ifs”—what if this doesn’t go viral? What if no one reads it? But when you write with intention and passion, those worries fade. You’ll find joy in the process itself.

Building a genuine audience takes time. It’s not an overnight process. But when you invest in creating valuable content, you’re laying the groundwork for meaningful connections. People will come to appreciate your authenticity and the knowledge you share.

As you decide to stop writing for numbers but for impact, don’t forget to celebrate the small wins. Each comment, each share, and each new follower/subscriber is a testament to your efforts to genuinely connect and provide value.

So, the next time you sit down to write, ask yourself: “Am I writing to connect?” If the answer is a resounding yes, then you’re already on the right path.
